Our process
- 1
Tell us what you know
Experts apply with a CV in about ten minutes. Firms point us to the records they want to share. Nothing moves without your sign-off.
- 2
We protect it
Names, emails, client and patient details are removed before anyone reviews a file or an answer.
- 3
We agree the value
Hourly rates and license terms are set in writing before any work or transfer starts.
- 4
You get paid
Experts are paid weekly. Firms are paid when the license is signed, and keep ownership of their records.
Built for the hard sciences
Confidential by design
Your records describe your clients, your people and your methods. We treat them that way, with controls you can see and terms you can read.
You keep ownership
We license defined usage rights. The records stay yours.
Anonymized first
Identifiers are removed before any person reviews a file.
Never published
Use is limited to training and evaluation, under contract.
Stop any time
Before signing, we halt and delete on request.
What is Lunchbreak?
Lunchbreak connects the people and firms who do technical work with the teams building frontier AI. Businesses license historical engineering and research records. Experts are paid to review, test and teach models in their field. In both cases, AI learns from how real work gets done.
Who uses the data and expertise?
AI research labs and enterprise teams training models for engineering, design and scientific work. Every engagement is covered by confidentiality and permitted-use terms. Nothing you share is published.
How is confidential information protected?
Records are anonymized before anyone reviews them, with names, emails, client identifiers and patient details removed. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, access is logged, and you approve the final dataset before it leaves our hands. See security.
Where is Lunchbreak based?
New York. We work with firms and experts in the United States, Canada, the UK and the EU, with more regions opening through 2027.
How much can I make?
It depends on your field, credentials and the project. Open engineering and CAD programs pay $40 to $160 an hour. Life sciences programs pay $70 to $150, physical sciences $75 to $140, and medical programs up to $200. Your exact rate is confirmed in writing before you start. Try the earnings estimator.
How do I qualify?
You need a degree in your field and at least two years of professional practice, or an advanced degree with active research experience. After you apply, you complete a short assessment in your specialty, about 20 minutes, conducted online. No prior AI experience is needed.
What does the work look like?
You might critique a model-generated drawing for GD&T errors, write a hard problem that a model gets wrong, grade an analysis of microscopy data, or explain step by step how you would design an assay. Projects are remote and run from a few weeks to several months.
How many hours can I work, and when?
Most experts work 5 to 20 hours a week, on their own schedule, around project deadlines. Some projects have capacity for full-time work.
How and when do I get paid?
Weekly, by direct deposit, for approved hours. You will see your rate and payment terms before accepting any project.
Does applying guarantee a project?
No. Applying makes you eligible. We match you when a project needs your background, and your profile stays active for future work.
Does my business qualify?
Generally, you need at least one year of operations, ten or more employees at some point, earned revenue, and clear rights to the records. Firms that are operating, winding down, or already closed can all qualify.
How is my data valued?
We look at how deep and complete the record is: years of history, peak headcount, revision history, the reasoning captured in reviews and notebooks, and how scarce the domain is. A sample review turns your estimate into a written offer. Try the estimator.
Who owns my data?
You do. We license specific usage rights defined in your agreement. You keep ownership of the records and can continue to use them however you like.
Can I choose what I share?
Yes. You choose the systems, folders and date ranges. You can exclude any project, client or record, and you review the anonymized dataset before it is approved.
Will my business data become public?
No. Data is never published. Use is limited to model training and evaluation under confidentiality and permitted-use terms.
What about export-controlled or patient data?
We do not accept ITAR or EAR controlled technical data. Clinical records are only accepted after de-identification that meets HIPAA standards, and we will tell you if a dataset cannot be used.
What if I want to stop?
You can stop at any point before signing. We halt processing and delete everything you shared.
